Closeup on output of both envelope detectors during bass beat. A beat is detected when the ouput of the 'fast' detector goes more than about 100mV above the 'slow' detector. Obviously the fast detector still can use some tweaking, but hysteresis on the comparator will cause most of the extra crossings to be ignored. Once triggered, the controller will take some time to run though the effect, so they wouldn't really matter anyway :-)
